Cracked Windshield? Try This DIY Fix

If you drive on the highway or in busy traffic, a rock or piece of debris from the road could fly up and cause a crack in your windshield. Even if this crack looks tiny to the naked eye, over time it can get a lot worse as the glass contracts and expands. Cracked windshields can impair your vision, causing a serious hazard when you get behind the wheel. If you've encountered a crack in your car's windshield, try this simple fix first before calling in a professional.

Windshield Prep

Before you can fix your cracked windshield, the surface needs to be fully prepared to take on the homemade patch solution you'll be making. Clean the window inside and out completely using a quality soap mixed with warm water. Use a soft microfiber cloth and get into as many cracks and crevices you can so that the entire area is clean and free of dust and dirt. Once you've washed the windshield, follow up with a quick spritz of glass cleaner and paper towels to remove any excess grease. Make sure the windshield is fully dry before you begin the repair.

Repair Ingredients

When you're ready to fix that annoying crack, make a simple mixture of one-half cup of warm water with one tablespoon of salt. Next, add a tablespoon of insect repellant and a tablespoon of rubbing alcohol to the salt and water. Make sure that everything is dissolved and that the mixture has a smooth consistency. This should all be mixed together in a bowl using a large spoon or paint stirrer.

Applying The Windshield Patch

Now that you've made the repair mixture for the crack, dip a sponge or a paint brush into the solution and rub it into the crack. Make sure you completely fill the entire crack and let it dry. A squeegee is a great tool to help push the solution deep down into the tiny crevices. Once it's dry, repeat the application process for a second coat. You may have to do this several more times depending on how deep the crack goes. Ensure that it dries thoroughly before each successive application. As it dries, you'll notice the surface of your windshield getting smoother and the crack should start to disappear. This simple process should easily fill in any small cracks you notice on your windshield and help you avoid paying for costly repairs. If the crack is too deep or long, it's always a good idea to consult a professional so you're certain you are driving under safe conditions.
