Eliminate Dust And Oily Stains From Cotton Fabric Blinds

If dust and oily stains are visible on portions of the cotton fabric blinds that are covering the windows in your home's living room, eliminate them with the following steps. Once the fabric blinds are clean, keep them maintained regularly to prevent additional staining.

Materials

  • tarp or plastic sheeting
  • can of compressed air
  • vacuum cleaner with hose attachment
  • sponges
  • warm water
  • mild detergent
  • small bucket
  • spoon
  • small bowl
  • baking soda

Eliminate Dust From The Fabric

Place a tarp or piece of plastic sheeting underneath each blind to collect dust particles as you clean the fabric. Use a can of compressed air or vacuum cleaner's hose to remove dust. Begin at the top of each blind and work your way downward. Move the can of air or hose attachment across each slat. If there are any thick layers of dust on portions of the blinds, move a dry sponge firmly over each one to loosen the dirty residue.

Remove Oily Stains From The Fabric

Fill a small bucket with warm water. Add a few drops of mild detergent to the bucket. Stir the contents in the bucket until they are sudsy. Use a sponge to apply the soapy solution to stains on the cotton. Allow the mixture to penetrate for a few minutes before scrubbing each spot that is dirty. For severe, oily stains, add equal amounts of baking soda and water to a small bowl. Stir the ingredients until they are smooth and the consistency of peanut butter. Apply a small amount of the mixture to each oily stain.

Wait several minutes for the mixture to absorb the oil from the fabric. Afterwards, scrub the stains with a clean sponge. Rinse the sponge out and apply it to the same spots in order to remove the baking soda and water mixture. Allow the fabric to air dry.

Maintain The Blinds

Minimize staining in the future by inspecting the blinds on a regular basis and wiping off any dust particles or dirty residue as soon as it becomes apparent. A damp, soapy cloth can be used to complete this step. If any greasy residue is on your hands and gets onto the blinds when you are opening them, treat the fabric immediately with soapy water or baking soda mixed with water. If you remove dust and stains in a prompt manner, it will not take long to clean the fabric and the blinds will continue to add beauty to the windows that they are covering.
